IN THE GARDEN — AKIKO CUTLIP

I recently lost my beloved mother. She was my best friend. She supported my art and life unconditionally.

My mother loved flowers. She especially loved Chabana (which is used for traditional Japanese tea ceremony). My father owns ikebana frog (cast iron flower arrangement needles) business.

My family was deeply connected with Ikebana.

She loved flowers that weren't gorgeous in the typical “showy” way, like a rose. Looking back, my Mom loved flowers that were simple, often found growing in the wild.

After my mothers passing, I was in such great sadness. One day I looked up and saw these beautiful flower shadows on the shoji screen. It was like my mom was telling me to find myself -- I was just so inspired by those shadows. It was a message from my mom.

Later that day, my dad told me that she has been waiting for those blossoms to bloom. I believe she was there that day and she shared that moment with me. Something I will always remember and forever cherish.

Since her passing, painting has served as a way for me to stay connected to her.  She surrounds me, and that energy finds its way into the painting. I’m so grateful for this connection. It gives my art new meaning.
